The causes of infertility are many and very diverse. They affect both men and women in a similar percentage, although the problems of conceiving with the female figure have traditionally been related. We will not now go deeper into this aspect of infertility, since it is something purely medical, we will only highlight one of them because we believe it is important and that it occurs quite frequently in our developed society, the reason is the maternity delay.
In recent decades and especially in developed countries, there has been a growing trend in delaying the arrival of a child, both for personal and professional reasons. So that, the number of women who decide to be mothers after age 30 is quite high. In fact, in Spain one in five women has their first child after age 35. Fortunately, most have healthy pregnancies and babies.
How does age influence fertility?
Usually women begin to experience a decrease in their fertility from the age of 30. In fact, the success rate of pregnancies in women over 40 years of age is close to 20%, and even lower in some cases, compared to 38% per cycle in those around 35 years of age.
Thus, at these ages, time plays a leading role: the more time passes, the more difficulties to conceive. On the other hand, the couple's age also influences negatively, given that semen quality is also affected, which makes it more difficult if fertilization is possible.
In general, the decrease in fertility in women over 35 years is due to the fact that they tend to ovulate less frequently than younger women. But certain health problems that are more common after this age also influence. For example, endometriosis, which causes the tissues to adhere to the ovaries or fallopian tubes and interfere with conception.
If a woman over the age of 35 has not become pregnant after trying to conceive for six months, she should consult her doctor. Studies suggest that approximately one third of women between 35 and 39 and about half of women over 40 have fertility problems.
When infertility is discovered
Normally it is advised that we go to visit an infertility specialist after two years of trying to have a child and not getting the desired pregnancy. Before it is not considered abnormal, many couples take more than a year to conceive, it is natural.
After a first medical visit, a series of diagnostic tests will be requested for both men and women. But it is not always possible to know for sure the origin of the problem. In any case the result is the same, no matter the reason: we cannot have children.
The diagnosis of an infertility / sterility problem can be a real "crisis" for the couple, understood as an alteration of their emotional balance that generates disorganization, hopelessness, sadness, anxiety and confusion.
